Vice Premier stresses western region development

Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang has stressed that more efforts should be made to develop the nation's vast western regions and speed up industrial restructuring to tap more economic potentials.

Li said during his recent inspection to the southwestern Chongqing municipality that China's western region has huge markets, abundant natural resources and big development potentials.

He said quick development of the west is for the benefits of local people and for the aim of facilitating the steady and relatively fast development of the Chinese economy.

Li said government measures to fight the global economic crisis are showing positive results, and the country's overall economic performance has stabilized and moving upwards.

But it should also be noted that the foundation for economic recovery is not yet stable and the government should continue adopting effective measures to guarantee the sustainable economic development, he added.

He stresses the importance of solidarity and harmony among different ethnicities, as the country's western region is inhabited by various ethnic groups.
